First Date

The most inaccurate picture of someone that you could possibly get comes with the first date. It’s funny because people put so much stock into first dates and believe it sets the stage for the rest of the relationship. But on a first date you’re not getting the real person, you’re not even getting the best version of the person, you’re getting the best image that the person could make up that you would still believe. It’s not the real thing.

I feel like most of us live our relationship with God in a perpetual “first date” mode. We don’t want to show any of our flaws, struggles, or sin because we want him to believe that we’re this perfect person.

That’s incredibly stupid for two reasons. First of all, God already knows your struggles. You’re not hiding it or fooling him, he knows what’s going on. But the second reason is even worse.

As long as we fool ourselves into thinking that we don’t have these struggles, we’ll be stuck there for the rest of our lives. God can’t heal you of sin that you’re unwilling to claim and confess. It’s only once we move out of first date mode and are able to be open and honest about what’s really going on that he can forgive, cleanse, and restore us.

So the question is: Do you want everyone, including God, to believe you’ve got to got it all together when you really don’t, or do you want to actually get better?
